Cataract

Cataract is one of the leading causes of slowly progressive visual loss. It is a clouding of the natural crystalline lens inside your eye. Cataract is usually a natural, age related process  but can be as a result of trauma, medications and other concurrent illness.  Symptoms include decreased clarity of distance vision, glare issues or an increasing need to change to spectacle prescription.

Surgery for Cataract

Treatment involves keyhole, sutureless surgery using a microscope to remove the natural lens and implant an artificial lens inside the eye. This is a day surgery procedure with excellent visual results anywhere from 1 week to 1 month following the operation. As a retinal specialist, Dr Warrier can ensure that any concurrent retinal issues are identified and managed before proceeding to cataract surgery, as this can affect your visual outcome. Most patients opt for standard cataract surgery, which results in excellent distance vision, but a requirement for reading glasses for near work. For patients keen for spectacle independence, Dr Warrier also offers premium cataract surgery with multifocal intra-ocular lenses. In suitable patients, this results in excellent vision at all focal distances, without the need for glasses.
